Book Review of That Summer

Sarah Dessen writes a great little romantic coming of age story titled, That Summer. The protagonist of this story, Haven, a fifteen year old, is a confused teenage girl that does not know where to fit in with her family, and the world. She´s a six-foot tall girl, who towers over everyone she knows. She´s having trouble fitting in with her family because her parents just got a divorce. Her dad is getting married to the so-called "Weather pet", Lorna Queen. In addition, her sister, Ashley, is a marrying a person that Haven can´t stand, and Ashley is always creating fights, because she´s the bride, and is now always stressed out. To top it off, her mom is going through a midlife crisis, and Haven cannot handle them all, and won't.

Everything is falling apart, but she´s always trying to keep a hold of the past, a memory of a specific summer. The summer vacation her family took a long time ago, with her sister´s ex-boyfriend, Sumner. He was playful, charming, exciting and nice. All the good memories they had are making Haven remember the past, and the perfect times in life, but then he left to college. No longer was he seen, and Haven always remembers how her sister broke up with him.

Then he came back, and turned Haven's life around, one more time.

Once you start reading you won’t want to stop. This profound story shows a struggling teen’s problems in a complicated family, and the ability to mature and understand trauma that can suddenly take over your life.

This book is one of the many great books written by Sarah Dessen; it also was her first published novel. It’s a realistic fiction novel, its intense, and has some love parts that may interest the reader.
